As your DC Cherry Blossom Maternity Photographer, capturing your growing bump amongst the iconic DC Cherry Blossoms is one of my greatest joys! The few short days each year that the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom in DC is a magical time. Over 3,000 cherry blossom trees line the tidal basin with jaw dropping views of the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials.
A session at the tidal basin during this time is not for the faint of heart. Millions (yes, millions) of people visit the cherry blossoms in DC during peak bloom each year. Parking is difficult and dodging large crowds is required. In my opinion it is all worth it for the priceless images we can capture together, but I like to give fair warning that this is not your average photoshoot. Advanced planning and flexibility are a must!
Tips to prepare from a DC Cherry Blossom Maternity Photographer
- To avoid the busiest times, I always schedule my cherry blossom sessions at sunrise and during the week. I do not do weekends during peak bloom because it is truly insane!
- I recommend taking an Uber, Lyft or public transit so you do not have to hunt for a parking spot. If your only option is to drive, have a well thought out plan for parking.
- Overall, you need to be prepared to deal with crowds and to be flexible and patient.
- If you are not married to the idea having photos at the tidal basin, there are lots of other great places to have a session amongst beautiful blooms in the DC area. For example: the Saucer Magnolias at Enid A. Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle (peak bloom about 2 weeks before peak at the tidal basin) or Cherry Blossoms at The National Arboretum (peak bloom about 2 weeks after peak at the tidal basin).
I only offer full sessions and only take one client per day for Cherry Blossom sessions so I can give you the extra time and attention required to make sure we can get those perfect Cherry Blossom captures.
