By mid-April in Washington DC when the tidal basin cherry blossoms have dropped all their petals a lesser known, but equally magnificent blossom begins to bloom. The Kwanzan cherry trees, with their delicate pink blossoms, transform the city once again into a fairy tale landscape of fluffy pink. Capturing special family moments amongst this ethereal beauty is my favorite part of spring in our city!
As a photographer, I have the privilege of documenting your growing families. And as residents of the DC area, we have access to so many spectacular settings for maternity sessions. The adorable family pictured here is expecting their second baby any day now. Maternity sessions with older children are one of my favorite types of sessions to capture. They serve two important purposes – both to capture the new life budding inside of mom and also this unique and special time while the family soaks in the last days as a family of three. You can feel the excitement and tenderness, the pull towards the future met with the longing to freeze time in the here and now because it will soon change forever.
The beauty of a maternity session amidst the Kwanzan Cherry Trees lies not only in the visual splendor, but also in the symbolism it carries. Just as the blossoms symbolize renewal and the fleeting nature of life, so too does pregnancy represent a season of transformation and growth. It’s a reminder that life is a beautiful, ever-changing journey, and each season is to be cherished.
When I have first time parents at a maternity session, everything revolves around the mama-to-be and the connection between the soon-to-be mom and dad. But when a soon-to-be big brother and/or sister is present the focus shifts to them. They are mom and dad’s whole world right now. They likely will not remember their early days as an only child, but it’s a time mom and dad always will. There is a special bond between parents and their first born and I find with my clients it’s something they treasure and want to cherish.
In the end, a DC Kwanzan cherry tree maternity session is not just about capturing beautiful photographs, it’s about celebrating the beauty of life in all its forms and honoring the profound journey of parenthood. It’s a reminder that amidst the chaos, there is also so much beauty, joy and connection to be shared. And what better way to celebrate life’s blossoming beauty than amidst the enchanting backdrop of DC Kwanzan Cherry Trees in full bloom!
