What to Wear for Spring Family Photos

Figuring out what to wear for spring family photos can be a daunting process. As the mom not only do you have to worry about picking out your own outfit, you are usually responsible for finding dads and coordinating the kids. It can be stressful, I know. Lucky for you I am a full-service family photographer, so I offer a beautiful client wardrobe that has a variety of dresses for mom to wear. I personally curate my client closet from boutiques like Nothing Fits But and Morning Lavender. I work with all of my clients to help mom pick her dress from my closet and then style the full family around that.

Below I’m sharing some of my top tips for styling the whole family for spring photos. I also share 5 styled looks using the dresses from my client closet and clickable links to make styling your family a breeze this spring!

What to Wear for Spring Family Photos

  1. Neutrals

Neutrals, neutrals and more neutrals. You may already be a neutral loving gal and you’re all for this! Or you could be thinking how boring it would be if everyone wore neutral tones. Let me tell you, neutrals don’t have to be boring and we can certainly add a complimentary color into the mix (soft pastels are my favorite!). But, overall neutrals are going to compliment any background, especially springtime greens and vibrant spring blooms. Neutral wardrobe selections will help keep your images from feeling overwhelming and distracting to the eye.

  1. Texture

Don’t be afraid to add some texture! A great way to do this is utilizing my client closet for mom’s dress. Most of my dresses are long and flowy which will add beautiful texture and depth to your images. If you have a little girl, I suggest a cute dress with minimal ruffles to add some detail and fun dimension to your photos.

  1. Dress for the elements

What I mean by “dress for the elements” is dress appropriately for the weather outside. For example, since we are learning about what to wear for spring family photos, you probably don’t want dad to wear a cable knit sweater or anything too heavy looking. I would opt for a light colored, neutral button down and khakis or dress pants. Make sure everyone is wearing something that compliments the current weather.

  1. Coordination

Coordination can be something that will keep you staring at your closet for hours. You know you don’t want everyone to wear the same color, but how do you mix and match well? I always start with Mom. When we have our planning/styling meeting, we’ll find a dress that you love and the rest of the family’s wardrobe can be based around that. If mom’s dress is white with tiny blue floral patterns, the little ones could have blue interspersed throughout their outfits (ex: a blue headband, blue button up, etc).

  1. Say no to bold colors and loud patterns

No matter the season, my number one rule, when selecting your family’s wardrobe is to skip bold, bright colors like red, yellow and orange. Bold colors and loud patterns distract, which detracts from the emotion and connection between your family. Neutral patterns are encouraged, think small tiny floral patterns or consider adding a textural element for added interest.
